Description de l'evenement:

A major storm will increasingly impact the Pacific Northwest this afternoon and through the night, affecting much of the western states into the weekend.

Rain will increase from Seattle and Portland, south into the Eugene and Redding areas. Coastal areas, through Friday, could receive 3 to 5 inches of rain, while inland areas along the Interstate 5 corridor will see 2 to 4 inches. Some favored parts of the coastal mountain range could receive up to 8 inches of rain. This will greatly increase the potential for flooding, especially along larger rivers by Friday morning.

Winds will also be on the increase, with widespread damaging winds likely overnight. Sustained winds of 40 to 60 mph will be likely along western Washington and Oregon. Coastal areas, as well as higher mountains along inland areas, could see gusts over 80 mph, with local gusts over 100 mph. Areas along the Interstate 5 corridor could see gusts to 70 mph. The high winds will extend southward through the Sierra. High winds will sweep inland across Idaho, Montana and Wyoming Friday.

Waves are already running 15 to 25 feet along coastal Washington and Oregon, but will be increasing to as high as 35 feet in a few locations. Waves of this magnitude will result in some coastal flooding.

Warmer air will surge into the area ahead of the storm system. This will keep snow levels running at about 3000 feet across Washington, with levels rising to as high as 7000 or 8000 feet across Oregon. After midnight, colder air will push in, and snow levels will drop to 1000 feet by Friday over Washington and northwest Oregon, to 2000 feet across the remainder of Oregon and 3500 feet across northern California. Significant accumulations of snow will occur in some of the highest elevations, with some areas receiving over 3 feet of snow.

Given the changeable conditions across the mountains, this, in combination with very high winds over an existing snow pack, the threat for avalanches will be high through at least today over much of the Northwest.
