(AP): Rising sea levels could inundate about 2,000 Indonesian islands by 2030, and rice shortages are expected next year due to wild weather blamed on climate change, the Environment Minister said on Monday. The assessment by Rachmat Witoelar was the Government's bleakest, yet of global warming's potential effects on the mostly poor Southeast Asian nation of about 18,000 islands, most of them unpopulated. ``It is very, very serious,'' Witoelar said at a news conference attended by Yvo de Boer, executive secretary of the U.N. climate treaty secretariat. (...) Delayed rains this year, followed by a hot spell, also hurt farmers. ``It is feared there will be a lack of rice production next year because of the changes in the weather and because the farmers are not used to this,'' Witoelar said. http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/003200701300312.htm Le rythme d'élévation du niveau des océans ne peut qu'augmenter dans un environnement qui se réchauffe. La Terre devrait se réchauffer d'environ 3°C d'ici 2100. Global mean sea level has risen by 3 mm per year these last 13 years. However, this can denote a steeper elevation, or this can be due to a temporary phase of steeper elevation. The continuation of the measurements is the only way to be sure of that. This rise is not homogeneous all over the oceans (map above): some places see a decrease in sea level, whereas at other places the rise can exceed 1 cm a year. http://www.jason.oceanobs.com/html/mission...mission_uk.html Lien à poster Partager sur d’autres sites
