Month of March looks to break record for rainy days

(BCN) - March this year is not the wettest March on record for the Bay Area, but it's coming close to at least tying the record for the highest number of rainy days in March in more than a century.

Today marks the 22nd rainy day this month, one day shy of the all-time March record of 23 days, in 1904, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Brooke Bingaman.

"It looks like we'll probably be breaking that record, or at least tying it," Bingaman said.

March this year hasn't given the Bay Area as much of a drenching in terms of the number of total rainfall inches as in other years.

At 7.7 inches, the total rainfall inches for the Bay Area this month is almost one and a half inches behind the 1983 March record, at 9.04 inches, Bingaman said.

The wettest single day in March this year was March 5, which saw 1.09 inches of rain - far off the record for a single day in March, reached in 1982 when 2.57 inches of rain fell.

Long stretches of consecutive rainy days are more common in December, January and February, and March tends to trail behind those months, Bingaman said.

Valentine's Day 1938 holds the unfortunate honor of marking the longest consecutive run of rain ever in San Francisco, at 19 days.

This March there have been nine consecutive rainy days, Bingaman said.

"It's definitely been a wet March, but the 1983 March," which was associated with an El Nino event from 1982 to 1983, was particularly rainy too, Bingaman said.

Et bien le 28/03/2006 était le 22ème jour de pluie (dans le mois) à San Fransisco. Le record en nombre de jour de pluie pour San Fransisco est de 23 jours, il date de 1904. En gros, il y a quatre jour (le 28), ils pensaient battre ce record qui date de plus d'un siècle.

Y etant, je pense que le record a ete battu car il a plu le 29, 30 et 31. A l'inverse, il n'a pratiquement pas plu en Virginie en mars (6,1 mm au mois de mars, normale = 117,9 mm). Il s'agit du second mois consecutif avec un enorme deficit en precipitation. La normale fevrier-mars est de 205 mm, et il n'a plus que 27 mm.
