"We often talk about contrasts with the weather across the UK but today was rather exceptional. It was the hottest May day for over 50 years, with temperatures in London peaking at 32C (90F). It was also hotter than any day last year and the highest temperature recorded anywhere in the UK since 11th August 2003 (10th August 2003 was the all time record breaking day). The sunniest place was Herne Bay in Kent with over 13 hours of blue sky. Although it was hot and sunny across much of England and Wales it was not a completely cloud free day. There were a few light showers across the Midlands, East Anglia and northeast England, even a crack of thunder was heard in places. In northern England there was a band of rain at dawn this slowly cleared to the north during the morning allowing things to brighten and warm up inland. But an east wind kept it cold on the east coast temperature in Newcastle didn’t get above 13 Celsius (55F). For Scotland and Northern Ireland it was more like March than high summer, an easterly wind and outbreaks of rain kept the temperatures really pegged back.11 Celsius (52F) was the high in Edinburgh and in Lough Fea the maximum was just 8C (46F). The rain edged north during the day across Northern Ireland and southern Scotland. Northern Scotland stayed mainly dry during daylight hours and the Borders and Dumfries and Galloway became drier by evening. Coldest to start day was in Kinbrace (Highlands) where to start the day the temperature was just 2C (36F). " EDIT : complément, même source: "With Friday’s hot weather on our minds, many are flocking to garden centres and stocking up on charcoal for the barbeques. We always tend to look to the skies when a bank holiday weekend rolls up and the beginning of this holiday weekend certainly didn’t disappoint. The weekend kicked off to a very hot and sunny start. Temperatures in London reached the dizzy heights of 32C (90F) on Friday making it the hottest May day for 52 years and coming in just short of the all time record of 33C (91F) recorded in 1944. An exceptional day considering the average temperature in London at this time of year is just 17C (63F). And it wasn’t just southern England that was basking in the sunshine. Northern parts of the continent were also enjoying some late spring sunshine, including Paris which reached 30C (86F). Although the hot weather wasn’t a welcome sight for all. Competitors of the French Open were certainly feeling the heat. The sun baked Roland Garros’ clay courts made for some tricky playing conditions and the pace of play had definitely eased as opponents stopped for water breaks."
