A severe gale swept across much of the UK last night and early this morning and has caused plenty of damage, especially to parts of northern England and North Wales. Highest gusts reported were 89 knots (102mph) on the Lleyn Peninsula, north Wales at 0300GMT, 90 knots (104mph) at St Bees Head at 0700GMT and 111 knots (128mph) on the top of Great Dun Fell, also at 0700GMT.

Parmi les images ; nord de l'Allemagne, une camionnette dansant sur ses roues puis basculant sous la force du vent. Viens de voir le jt nuit sur Fr2.

Pour la France, me semble qu'à Brignogan c'est aussi monté à 100 km/h.

Par ici (bordant aussi la Manche, enfin c surtout une grosse excuse ) rafales de SW mesurées entre 60 et 85 km/h selon endroits et heures, entre 22 h et 6 h nuit de vendredi à samedi.

Petit descriptif (en anglais) de cette journée du 08/01:

As the calender changed to January 5th 2005, the storm centre was just west of Northern Ireland with a central pressure of 980mb. All sounds normal. By 6 0'clock the central pressure had dropped to 969mb and was over the souther Uplands of Scotland. This was about the time of our worst winds. Midday saw it off the coast of southern Norway deeper still at 962mb with winds near hurricane strength over Denmark.

For a few days this potential for rapid strengthening of winds had been seen in the forecast models with the possibility of a "sting jet" - a swathe of suddenly violent winds hitting the surface at 80 or 90 mph. It's hard to say whether there was a sting jet but there was certainly violent wind.

The swathe swept from Anglesey through the Isle of Man to Cumbria whilst the wind was southwesterly. Then as it veered to the northwest during the morning all of northern England was subject to a land gale and gusts between 55 and 130mph!
